  • Anger Management

Have you ever been frustrated and angry to a point where you started shouting at other people and said things you didn't mean to say? Sometimes, you only realize what you did was wrong when it was too late, after the damage had been done. We should learn to direct this negative energy in a good way. What does Islam teach us?

There was a lecture by Sheikh Sudais (Imam of the Holy Mosque in Mecca), where he told mothers to watch what they say to their kids when they get angry. He mentioned a story about a little boy whose mom used to say to him when she became angry with him, “May Allah make you an Imam!” and she kept saying this du'a until the anger and frustration faded away. He continued the story and said “Here I am mom, the Imam of the Holy Mosque!”

SubhanAllah, what an amazing story. This lecture reminded me of the following hadith, “Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Prophet PBUH said: Three supplications are answered without doubt: the supplication of one who has been wronged, the supplication of a traveler and the supplication of a parent for his child.”

Alhamdulillah, such is the Mercy and Compassion of Allah that there is even hikmah (wisdom) in becoming angry. He has allowed us to vent our anger in a positive way, by making du'a to Him.

The Prophet PBUH taught that when sensing anger, sit down if you are standing and lie down if you are sitting and put out the anger with wudhu (ablution).

I also remember the story of Sayyidina Ali RA when he was about to kill a man in war, but the man spat on him. Ali stopped, threw aside his sword and walked away saying, "I do not want to kill you out of anger." The man became amazed by this action and asked "For what reason did you throw your sword aside and quit fighting me?" Ali said, "I strike with the sword for the sake of God alone. My actions are evidence of my religion."

MashaAllah, Sayyidina Ali RA was truly a purified servant of Allah, and a strong warrior, the Lion of God. The Prophet PBUH said: “The strong man is not the one who can fight well. The strong man is the one who can keep hold of himself when he is angry.” (Agreed upon)

Brothers and Sisters, the grandest day for the ummah of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH is the day of his birth. But for Rasulullah SAW himself, the grandest day for him is the night he ascended into the heavens and entered into the presence of the Lord Almighty Himself. He went where no other creature, nor angel, man or jinn had gone before. Many scholars believed it occurred on the night of 27th of Rajab.

There's a mention of this event in the famous Qasidah Burdah nasheed.

Whatever the exact date of ascension is not important, and knowledge of it does not do us any benefit. What is important is that we realize the importance and significance of this auspicious event. Allah knows best.

My mom gives me ill wishes when she's angry (i.e; may God never make me happy & make me barren), will this also come true?
