  • What to look for in a friend ^___^

    Salam ^___^

    1. Allah said:

    And (remember) the Day when the Thalim (wrong-doer, oppressor, polytheist, etc.) will bite at his hands, he will say: "Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger (Muhammad (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam)).
    Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend!
    He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (this Quran) after it had come to me. And Shaitan is ever a deserter to man in the hour of need".
    [Al-Furqaan 25:27-29]

    2. The Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

    A person is upon the Deen of his friend. So, let one of you look to whom he keeps as a friend. [Tirmidhi]

    The likeness of a good companion and a bad companion is that of a perfume seller and one who works the bellows. With the perfume seller, either he will give you something or you will buy something from him, or you will notice a good smell from him, but with the one who works the bellows, either he will burn your clothes or you will notice a bad smell from him. [Saheeh Muslim]

    3. Ibn Qudaamah al-Maqdisi said:
    Know that not everyone is suitable to be your friend. You must verify that this potential friend has the necessary characteristics that make friendship with him something to be desired. The one you seek to befriend must have five characteristics:

    * He must be intelligent, as there is no good in befriending an idiot, as he will only harm you when he wants to benefit you. By intelligent, we mean one who understands things as they are, either on his own, or if they are explained to him;

    * He must have good manners, and this is a must. One who is simply intelligent might be overcome by anger or desire, and obey his desire. Thus, there would be no benefit in befriending him;

    * He must not be a Faasiq, as such a person would not fear Allah, and whoever does not fear Allah cannot be trusted;

    * He must not be an innovator, as his abundance of innovation is feared from befriending him;

    * He should not be eager for the dunya.

    [Mukhtasar Minhaaj al-Qaasideen by Ibn Qudaamah]

  1. Good points there. Thank you for sharing.

    But what about bid'ah hasanah (good innovation)? Umar al-Khattab and Uthman ibn Affan used to innovate too.

    Examples of bid'ah hasanah:
    Compilation of the Qur'an
    Congregation of Taraweeh

    I'm sure that's OK isn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong, this is my personal opinion.

    Salam.

    I'm not an islamic scholar to clarify things,
    perhaps these links can help :

    1)Compilation of Quran

    With regard to what you mention about Abu Bakr compiling the Qur’aan, this is not bid’ah, rather it is Sunnah such as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined us to adhere to when he said: “I urge you to adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided khaleefahs after me.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2676; Abu Dawood, 4607; Ibn Maajah, 42. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Tirmidhi, by al-Haakim, 1/177; and by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 2549, from the hadeeth of al-‘Irbaad ibn Saariyah). This is one of the Sunnahs of the Rightly-Guided Khaleefah Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq (may Allaah be pleased with him).

    For further details, please go to this link, I just quoted some of those :

    2)Congregation prayer-taraweeh

    It's not a bidaa'h.

    Umar Al Khatab did mention about "bidaa'h hasanah",
    it's actually a linguistic meaning of bidaa'h , not sharee'ah definition.

    For futher details ,
    please go to this link :

    I'd like to urge all of us to really understand the meaning of
    IBADAT first, then try to comprehend the meaning of bidaa'h itself, before we claim something is bidaa'h or not.

    The most important thing is to trigger ourselves "Is ibadah that I'm doing follow the right example of the Prophet Rasulullah sallallahua'laihiwasalam?"

    Wallahua'lam
    Wassalam
